Navigating the Collection: Finding a Book on the Shelves

Looking to find an item physically on the shelves?

  • After you have found your item using the online catalog search, make sure you note the item's location, ensure that it is at your home library location (Dick Smith or Rickett) and then either write down the call number or use the catalog's "Text This to Me" feature.
  • At Dick Smith (Stephenville campus):
    • Second Floor: The majority of our collection, referred to as the General Stacks, is located upstairs.
    • First Floor: The main level holds our periodicals or journal collection.
    • Basement: The basement holds the children's curriculum collection out on the main floor.  The Resource Room houses the K-12 state adopted textbooks, anatomical models, and A/V materials. The Tarleton Archives houses local history and archival materials. Children's books will be marked in the call number with the letters "EDUC".
  • At Rickett (Fort Worth campus): Check with library staff on locating physical books.
  • Use the diagram included on this page to break down and understand the call number.
  • Once you're in the correct location, look on the ends of the shelves at the call number range signs. First look for the letters that start off the call number, then the first set of numbers, then proceed from there.

As always, if you're ever confused or have questions feel free to ask a librarian or other staff member!
