Case 1: Feasibility Report: Building An Anti-Racism Center

You have been hired as a community liaison to the Stephenville City Council. Over the summer a number of protests were held against police killings. A number of officials and parents have noted that there is a need for education on history, race and violence in the community at various levels. Rather than tackle these on an individual basis you have been advised that an “Anti-Racism Center” would be a solution that can answer the problems of the community in a more definitive manner. You are now tasked with presenting this to the mayor in a “Feasibility Report.” Your report should include the following -

  • Description of what the center is and should do
  • Explanation of the problem using specific examples
  • Examples of such anti-racism centers/institutions in the country
  • Cost of the project
  • Argument for the cost effectiveness
  • Argument for whether it will be accepted by the community

You are in charge of a small team of technical communicators who will be collaborating on completing this report. In addition to the formal report you will produce, you will also be responsible to write –

  • An informal report to your supervisor-either the Deputy Mayor or Mayor. This report should explain your initial finding that the city has a race problem and you have found that an “Anti-Racism Center” would serve as a solution.
  • A memo to your group sharing the purpose of the assignment, goals you want to achieve, who is responsible for various aspects, and hard and soft deadlines the group will need to meet.

First you will need identify what type of center the city will need, examples across the country, and what the center will improve.  You can use social work and criminal justice databases for this.

Next you will need estimated Stephenville, Tx. or Erath county statistics and information about a problem.
