There are a variety of different approaches to qualitative research. Below are some of the most used approaches:

Approach

What's that?

Grounded Theory

Collect data on a topic to develop a theory.

Ethnography (in-person) or Netnography (online)

Immersing oneself in a culture to understand its social structures.

Action Research

Researchers and participants combine research and action to drive social change.

General Inquiry

Encompasses a variety of approaches (such as narrative, historical, and case study) to explore a variety of questions and to understand perceptions, historical developments, or specific cases.

Phenomenology

The study of people's lived experiences to understand the essence of a phenomenon.
