Chicago Basic Formatting Guidelines
General Guidelines
- Double space, 1-inch margins.
- Use a font that is easy to read, like Times New Roman, and no less than 10 pt. size.
- Page numbers start in the header of the first page of text with number 1.
Title Page
Class papers either include a title page or the title on the first page of the text. If needing a title page, use the following guidelines:
- Title is centered a third of the way down.
- Name, class information, and date follows several lines down (each on separate lines).
- Double-Space each line.
References
- On a separate page from your text, include your sources. The header of this section will depend on what system of Chicago you used.
- For Notes and Bibliography system, center Bibliography at the top.
- For Author-Date system, center References at the top.
- Leave two blanks between your header and first entry.
- List sources in alphabetical order by author's last name.
- For sources with no author, you'll use the title.
- Sources are single spaced with a line between each source.
- Always use a DOI if able. Use a URL if no DOI.
